‘Rizzoli & Isles’ Review: “Can I Get a Witness?” (2.11)

Our favourite female crime fighting duo is finally back!

After a three month hiatus, Rizzoli & Isles’ winter episodes got a warm welcome back on Monday night as we were joined with live-tweeting by the lovely Sasha Alexander (@SashaAlexander1) and Angie Harmon (@Angie_Harmon), among others. And the fans’ enthusiastic attitude towards the show’s return brought the hashtag #RizzoliandIsles to trend worldwide.

The case this week tested the loyalties within the Boston Police Department. The team is joined by Assistant District Attorney, Valerie Hudson (Roselyn Sanchez), as they use witness, Dante, to testify against gang member Little T, who is charged with killing a community activist. Tensions are high since the BPD has failed numerous times to convict Little T in the past, for he allegedly killed 15 people. Once their witness was suddenly killed, Korsak was forced to reveal his confidential informant.
After refusing to do so, rumour spreads that Korsak invented said informant. I couldn’t believe for a second that he would do such a thing, considering he’s always been such a stand-up guy. So I was not surprised to find out that he was willing to give up his badge to protect his informant: Dante’s girlfriend, and their child.

I do believe the identity of Korsak’s informant came as much more of a surprise than Dante’s killer. I knew there was a greater importance than augmenting the show’s ‘gay factor’ when they had Maura changing Valerie’s flat tire. Especially, when Maura went into detail about how the flat was caused by a roofing nail; I made mental note to myself to remember that fact. So when Jane and Maura find tire prints at the scene of Dante’s murder, what did we see as part of the imprints? Yup, a roofing nail. As it turns out, Valerie Hudson had been working for Little T and was the one who was responsible for Dante’s death. Looks like she’s not going to be the District Attorney she wanted to be after all.

On the lighter side of things, Bass is back! I don’t know about you but I was very excited to see my favourite tortoise again! Particularly, when it involves Maura and her adorable mothering ways, treating Bass like the king he is. But the fun doesn’t stop there, she runs into Ma Rizzoli, who was watching Bill O’Reilly’s show, and Angela starts gushing about how fond she is of this television host. Jane walks in with the groceries (how domestic), and reprimanded Maura for leaving her door unlocked (how protective). In usual Jane fashion, she first gets mad at her mom, telling her to turn off the television, only to get agitated at her to turn it back on again when she finds out Bill O’Reilly is talking about her case.

When both Jane and Frankie refuse to take Angela to O’Reilly’s book signing, Maura happily volunteers, much to Jane’s dislike. At the book signing, Angela gets Maura to use her ME badge to get them to the head of the line. And after starting off all star-struck and googly eyed, Angela quickly becomes her normal self again when O’Reilly realizes she’s Jane’s mother. Much to Maura’s dislike (she even attempts some fake coughs to stop it), Angela gives O’Reilly Jane’s cell phone number because he wants her on his show to talk about her case. But in the end, even though Jane refused to go on O’Reilly’s show, he reports highly of the outstanding work her and Korsak did in solving this case.

This episode was brilliant with its humour and wit from all the characters. Especially, from our two leads. We have Jane and her complete disregard for all she’s learnt in sensitivity training; she’s just hilarious as she picks on Maura and harasses Stanley. And then there’s our favourite talking Google, Dr. Isles, who never ceases to make us laugh with her facts and urgent matters involving orthopods to tend to.

It was so nice to have the bickering, bantering, and playful teasing back between Maura and Jane. I’ve missed it so. But we must cherish it, because from the looks of it, tension will be brewing between the dynamic duo next week as Maura gets real close to Tommy Rizzoli. (Poor Janey!)
