It’s Valentine’s Day and Jess is feeling twirly, so she plans to have a one night stand and packs an overnight back in case (sewing kit included) and box of condoms for “little Jess .” Jess brings her wingman team and it’s non-other than Cece and Schmidt. At the bar they both watch Jess failed attempts to interact with a few of the men there. Until finally when she gets help after accidentally chokes on a cherry she meets Oliver (Ryan Kwanten).
Jess finds that she has nothing in common with Oliver and is the perfect candidate to be her one night stand. From then on the night takes on a hilarious awkward and disastrous toll, Jess does make it to Oliver’s apartment, along with Schmidt who was their ride and who she immediately kicks out. Soon after Oliver’s ex-girlfriend shows up, then Cece crashes the place looking for Schmidt along with her boyfriend Kyle who is high on mushrooms. This confrontation leads to Cece and Oliver’s ex to get in a cat fight after Cece tries to pull Kyle away from her and Schmidt carrying her out.
In the end, Jess ends up getting Oliver back with his ex and almost contemplates sleeping with Schmidt, that is, before Nick drags her away from the door.
And Schmidt, after Jess throws him out of Oliver’s place he finds himself stuck outside and can’t leave because some youths (as he calls them) took his tires. By night’s end Schmidty gets what he’s been wanting for a while, Cece. Even though this may have been the result of all the crazy happening on Valentine’s Day, I look forward to what in store for these two. Who knows where this will be going, judging by Cece’s expression the next day she may have regretted it.
Meanwhile, with Julia’s job in the way, Nick ends up spending his Valentine’s Day outside her office with her intern Cliff (Clark Duke). They start chatting over wine, Nick tells him about his heartbreak while he was in law school and how it played in him dropping out, which ranged from learning to play guitar in alt-country ska band, to gambling and even entered a cock fight in Mexico as a person. Unintentionally he convinces Cliff to quit working for Julia. Even though their plans don’t fall through, instead of just leaving, Nick decides to help Julia out while also photocopying his butt.
In the meantime, Winston trying to fix his relationship with Shelby, a change from their former booty call days arrives to have a valentine’s date with just the two of them but ends up having a girls night with her and her friends, getting his pores cleansed, drinking cranberry juice, and talking about work-outs. By the end of the night Winston is actually having a great time chatting and making Sangria for the girls, and gets rewarded for his efforts.
Valentine’s Day gave us some nice character development as well as moving forward story lines for futures episodes, one of my favorites being Schmidt and Cece. Those two have been fun to watch from the beginning with Cece putting a halt to Schmidt’s advances, and this time around she went for it. It was pretty funny though that she tells him that she would use the excuse that he drugged her and it would be her word against him (though I doubt Schmidt would do such a thing). This leads to the question of what will we have in store for this couple? Will things end up awkward between the two or will they keep this under wraps for a while?
I also enjoyed Winston story line as well, he really wants to start a better relationship with Shelby from what it was in the past and seems to be making good progress on that front. I look forward to Shelby interacting with the gang and how they’ll perceive her once she meets them.
With Nick and Julia, it’s nice to see them try to make their relationship work even with Julia’s job taking up a lot of her time. It would be nice to see more of them, but based on the number of episodes Lizzy Caplan will be on, it may not last so long, though then again she could possibly return. And her intern Cliff, Clark Duke is just pretty hilarious in anything he’s on it was funny at the beginning when he didn’t know Nick was Julia’s boyfriend and kept going on about how he’d like to hit that. I would love it if he came back as well.
And lastly Jess, I really can’t see her having a one-night stand, she’s more of the relationship type. Kinda sucks she didn’t get her twirly self on. And even though I love her friendship with Schmidt I wouldn’t look forward to anything beyond that happening. I think both are much better suited with Nick and Cece, respectively. At the same time you could help but laugh at how the scene outside Scmidt’s door unfolded when Nick finds her there, his face at the realization of what she was about to do and then dragging her away was great.
