From fudged-up family dinners, to evil and extremely sad twists, this week’s all-new American Horror Story, wasn’t lacking in anything except for Vivian – which I can’t say I minded.
I liked that we again flash to back to when Tate was still alive. Constance and her family are never lacking in drama or disturbing qualities. The family dinner with Lawrence left me with one question — why isn’t his face burned? This was soon answered. Thought it is incredibly twisted what Tate did, his mind was so far gone at this point, it’s understandable what led him to shooting his fellow classmates. We also learn that he burned Lawrence’s face right after he did several lines of coke and went on to kill the students. Evan Peter’s who plays Tate, is truly amazing, as he never fails to make my skin crawl and fear for kids who might be just as messed up as this character.
In a small scene between Ben and Vivian, Ben let’s Vivian know that her babies have two fathers, and he believes that she was raped. This was perfect for me, because honestly these two characters have so many issues, and compared to the rest of the house, they really are lackluster. If I was Vivian, however, I would have told him to shove it and never look at me again.
I loved the storyline of Constance being blamed for Travis’s murder. It was a good way to show how the police have been suspicious of her in the past for the disappearances of her Husband, Moira and the “natural” death of her son Beau. Also – how did everyone like the fact that she turned her husband’s body into dog food? Yum. It was also a great way to get Denis O’Hare and Jessica Lange together in several scenes. The way those two act together is unforgettable. Lawrence is still so obsessed with Constance, and Constance despises him so much, that it almost makes you feel sorry for Lawrence. After Constance threatens him with a knife and kicks him while he’s down, telling him, “I never loved you, I endured you,” — Ouch. Lawrence then goes to the house to get Travis’ clothing and the murder weapon, only to be confronted by his dead wife and children. This part to me was probably the most disturbing. Hats-off to the special effects and the make-up department for making Lorraine and the kids look like burn victims that were in-fact, still burning, the performance of Lorraine was truly creepy.
Meanwhile, Ben hires an exterminator because of their fly problem. When the exterminator goes into the crawl space to find the source of the problem, he finds it, screams and then Tate jumps out and lovingly kills him. Oh Tate, you murderer, you!
After speaking with a truancy officer, who tells Ben that Violet hasn’t been to school in 16 days; Ben talks to Violet and agrees to find her a new school. Tate makes up a story to tell Violet that her dad is trying to send her away to boarding school – upsetting Violet. Tate attacks Ben in the rubber-man suit. Ben is able to rip off the mask before he passes out, revealing that Tate was the one who raped, Vivian. After Tate knocks out Ben, he goes to Violet and tells her that they should commit suicide together, so that Ben can’t take her away. After agreeing, Violet runs out, screaming that Tate is trying to kill her. When she tries to run away however, she keeps ending up back in the house. Scared and confused, Tate grabs her – revealing that Violet is in fact already dead from overdosing. Tate takes Violet to the crawl space and shows her, her dead and decaying body. Now, I know it was pretty obvious that Violet was dead a few weeks ago after she downed all those pills, but it was still shocking – at least the image of her body was. I’m very sad to find out that poor, naïve, Violet is stuck in that house with Tate forever. I’m interested to see how her parents will take it, when they find out she’s dead.
The ending of this episode was my favorite. After Lawrence confesses to killing Travis, even though he’s innocent, Constance goes to visit him. Lawrence tells her he confessed so he can pay for his past sins. Constance doesn’t hold back in showing her happiness at him rotting in jail. When Lawrence holds his hand up to the glass, Constance pretends as though she’s going to say she once loved him. After holding her hand up to the glass for a second, she pulls it back with a delightfully evil smirk and walks away. Leaving Lawrence devastated.
