‘American Horror Story’ Recap: “Afterbirth” (1.12)

Deck the halls with lots of spirits, fa la la la la, la la la la. Oh American Horror Story, the things you do to me. It took awhile for my brain to catch up to what was happening on screen, but after a short night of sleep, I came to the realization that I mildly enjoyed last nights episode. Though I’m still extremely sad that Dylan McDermott’s character died as well, I was really hoping he’d be the only survivor. Apparently my favorite shows this season insist on killing all of my favorite characters. There must be something in the water.

Let’s begin well…at the beginning. We flash back to nine months ago when Vivian is trying to leave Ben back in Boston. We see how he convinces her to move to Los Angeles and into the Murder House. He wants a new start with her, and what a new start it was…

Now to Constance, who shocker has Vivian’s living baby, aka Devil!Baby who her dead son Tate is the father of. Speaking of which, I still don’t understand how he could have impregnated her…he’s dead. I think Ryan Murphy took a page out of Twilight. Ben takes the baby from Constance who is so obviously trying to keep the baby. She warns him not to take the baby back into the house, but he doesn’t heed her warning.

Ben goes back to the house where Vivian is there with Moira – they have formed a bond. Though Ben so desperately wants to see Vivian, she won’t allow herself to be seen by him so that he doesn’t want to stay in the house. Later in his grief, Ben takes a gun to his head, but Vivian and Violet convince him not too. When he tries to leave the house Hayden confronts him with her band of crazy dead people. They hang him from the chandelier and take the baby.

A new couple is being shown the house. They tell them about the Harmon’s and how they all died, but they decide to move in anyway. They also have a son around Violets age, who has an early run in with the dead boys who usually reside in the basement.

Constance is at her house talking to the cops from the previous episode about how she found Ben dead. She tells them that she came across Violet, who ran away with the baby. But she really went to the house, saw Ben dead and then confronted Hayden who had the baby. Travis sneaks up behind her and slits her throat, taking the baby and giving it to Constance. After the cops leave, Constance reveals the baby who she had been keeping in the closet.

Vivian and Ben see the happy couple move into the house. While the couple is basically having sex on the kitchen counter, Ben and Vivian decide they want to get the couple out before it’s too late. Moira comes in and agrees to help him, because she doesn’t want anymore innocent lives lost.

While the couple is sleeping, the husband Miguel goes into a trance as Ben had in the first episode. He wonders down to the kitchen where he looks as though he’s going to set his hand on the burner. Meanwhile, Ben comes in the rubber suit and begins to terrorize the wife. While this is happening, Tate confronts the couple’s son Gabe, and tells him he has to kill him so that Violet won’t be alone in the house. Violet stops him, while Vivian and Moira stop Miguel from burning himself and he gets to the basement with his wife. Ben and Vivian confront the couple in the basement. Vivian stabs Ben, ripping out his intestines; while Ben shoots her in the head – how lovely…Then they tell the couple to get out before the house does the same thing to them. They run to their car and never come back. Ben, Vivian and Violet watch them drive away and realize they now know what to do to drive families away fast.

Tate and Ben have a talk ghost to ghost. Ben tells Tate that he’s sick and he’ll never forgive him and that Tate needs to learn how to confess to his crimes. Tate ends up telling him about the shooting and all of the murders he’s committed. Ben appreciates it and Tate asks him if maybe they could “hang out” from time to time….

Vivian is playing the cello – did we know that she could play the cello? Anyway, she’s playing the cello when she hears a baby crying. She goes to the basement to find Nora with the baby she thought was stillborn. Nora tells her he took a breath of life before passing, but she can’t handle his crying. Vivian take the baby upstairs where she makes Moira the godmother. The family gets together and decorates a Christmas tree, while Tate watches on with sadness. Ben claims to Vivian that he knows it’s not right, but he’s happy.

Three years later Constance goes into her hair salon where she tells her stylist about her new “son”. She gives a crazy and actually quite amazing monologue before she goes back to the house where she calls out for the Nanny, Flora. She sees blood on the floor and follows the trail to the little boys bedroom. Poor Flora is on the floor in a pool of blood, her throat slit. She looks up to see the boy, blood on his hands and face, looking quite proud of himself. Constance, goes to the boy and touches his face in almost a loving, yet sickened way saying, “Now what am I going to do with you.”

So this leaves me with the question…what now? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out next season.
