Though it doesn’t seem like quite that long ago, theaters were met with the panned remake of a cartoon classic as Yogi Bearblended CGI animation and live action for a release that didn’t exactly stand the test of time. Unfortunately, the family-friendly comedy went on to gross $200 million at the box office which happens to be just the right amount of money to send a sequel into greenlit territory. Though there’s a good chance the cast may not change, today the second installment may have just a glimmer of hope as it turns out that the man responsible for comedy hits Super Troopers and Beerfest is back behind the camera to hopefully honor the classic character on the big screen.
Deadline reports that Jay Chandrasekhar, a member of comedy troupe Broken Lizard, has been hired by Warner Brothers to direct and rewrite the script for Yogi Bear 2. The first film’s director Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) has been said to not return for the project, while it’s still likely that Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake will be back to voice Yogi and Boo Boo, respectively.
Chandrasekhar’s latest film The Babymakers hasn’t exactly seen glorious reviews, but the fact that he’s tackling this take on the Hanna/Barbera cartoon could mean good things. Though Dukes of Hazzard wasn’t his finest hour, here the creative mind could sneak in a few more nods that only adults will get while still delivering an hour for the kids that all-ages could in turn find enjoyable.
At best, let’s just hope it’s not as dreadful as the first one.
No release date or production start has been set for Yogi Bear 2 just yet, but with Chandrasekhar’s hiring there’s a good chance it could move into filming sometime next year for a 2014 release.
