Just last week, we told you that Shailene Woodley was aiming to join the upcoming sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Spidey’s true love Mary Jane Watson. But with the inclusion of the important character, it was unclear exactly where we would find female lead Gwen Stacy and Peter’s love life in the follow-up. Though it’s been speculated since the announcement of Gwen as the female lead, now new details have risen that indicate one famous story arc may be coming to life with the third film in the trilogy while we may not see too much of Woodley in the 2014 sequel.
THR reports that Shailene Woodley has made some scheduling room to sign on as the lead of the young adult adaptationDivergent, citing her hesitance to take on the role was due toThe Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, it seems she may be flexible to do both because the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie.” In other words: we’ll see Mary Jane in the second film, but only in a minor supporting role (somewhat like Aunt May in the first film).
But what exactly could this mean for the third film that is already being planned? Well it seems like a love triangle may turn into some major grieving as the site says “the studio seeks to build to the classic ‘Death of Gwen Stacy’ story”. Since Gwen’s involvement as a female lead, it’s long been rumored that Sony would be bringing the famous story to the big screen that could shock audiences who don’t know otherwise. As Electro is rumored to be the villain of the second film, we could continue to also build towards the inclusion of Norman Osborn, who was given plenty of pretty little plot details in dialogue only for the first film.
The detail that the studio is adapting The Death of Gwen Stacyto film also unofficially confirms that we’ll have The Green Goblin as our main antagonist. Rumors still persist that Harry Osborn will be introduced in the second installment, but there is no official word on any casting developments yet. If the son of the powerful Marvel man is in fact included within the next installment, there’s a chance that perhaps we’ll have a precursor to the Goblin’s tyrannical run before Gwen Stacy enters her final days.
Production is currently scheduled to kick off in March 2013 with Marc Webb returning as director and Andrew Garfield at least confirmed to reprise his role of Peter Parker. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently slated to be released May 2nd, 2014.
