Opening against mega-hit The Avengers, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel wasn’t exactly the most buzzed about release of the past summer. Starring an impressive cast of elder actors and actresses, the comedic drama has actually managed to become one of the most profitable films of the year as the $10 million budget was met with a $130 million worldwide gross. Seeing that box office success, it seems that regardless of immediate popularity Fox Searchlight Pictures wants to continue the fun as they are looking into developing a follow-up featuring the same cast of regular retirement home residents.
Vulture reports that the studio division has tapped original screenwriter Ol Parker to develop a treatment to pitch to executives for a sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. If successful, a script will then be greenlit with a possible production start for sometime next year. Insiders for the project say that the cast “all wants to come back,” but nothing is currently concrete at the moment.
Starring Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel and others, the first film followed seven British seniors who go on vacation in India in the hopes of a massive luxurious vacation but instead find a retirement hotel that is looking to transform into the oasis the pamphlet described. Though the ending pretty much tied everything together in a nice little bow, it’s unclear where exactly a sequel would take the eight individuals. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether or not every single actor would return but that’s all set to be ironed out once the ball gets rolling.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is currently available to own on Blu-Ray and DVD, while cast member Judi Dench reprises yet another role of her’s as M in the new Bond film Skyfall set to hit theaters in the U.S. on November 9th.
