Though there has been easily a ratings struggle for nearly every network thus far this season, it’s clear that the competition has exploded thus far. While CBS still sits safely at the top, it’s NBC that has won premiere weekend and already dished out a trio of pick-ups to their biggest freshman hits. As for the other networks, fates still remain up in the air as series such as The Mob Doctor, 666 Park Avenue, Last Resort and more continue to limp among the ratings against heavy hitters. But it seems FOX may be pleased with their past two weeks as it turns out their two acclaimed comedies will be on televisions everywhere until May.
Today, FOX announced that they have picked up new comedies Ben & Kate and The Mindy Project for full first seasons. However, The Mindy Project will be receiving 22 episodes whileBen & Kate will only be getting 19. The reason being is not for anything too alarming for the time being, but just due to the fact that creator and showrunner Dana Fox is currently pregnant so FOX would like to give the upcoming new mommy plenty of time with her newborn.
FOX chairman Kevin Reilly released the following statement on the pick-up, saying “Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project have everything we want to stand for in comedy. Smart writing, hugely appealing casts and comedy that feels contemporary and real – which is why we’re confident they will continue to build on what is already an appointment comedy night for young, influential audiences on Tuesdays.”
This pick-up sets FOX’s Tuesday night comedy block for the rest of the season as full seasons of successful series New Girl is already set along with a full year of Raising Hope.
Ben & Kate and The Mindy Project were among a number of must-watch lists for the Fall, being acclaimed as the top comedies of the year among other contenders. Though their second weeks saw a ratings drop, it’ll be interesting to see how they shape up in the months ahead.
