With the unveiling last week that The Wolverine wouldn’t in fact be a prequel but rather a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand and the original trilogy, chatter around the film skyrocketed from how the upcoming spin-off would connect to the first film to where it will take the series from here. Though there’s been plenty of rumors and even a fan-made teaser poster that hit very early this year, as production continues we’ve been getting more answers regarding exactly what’s to come in next summer’s blockbuster. Now in a live chat involving star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold, the first true teaser poster for the film has been revealed along with plenty of interesting details regarding what’s to come in Japan.
First off, here is the teaser poster that displays a ink-drawn Logan popping his claws (click for a hi-res version):
Among some of the interesting things revealed in the live chat, Mangold and Jackman said that though our hero is essentially immortal and his healing factor has always placed him in a position where he avoids nearly any kind of danger, The Wolverine will present a major weakness that is described as Logan’s “kryptonite”.
And though Logan has always been looking back at the past and has been presented as a tortured soul, we’ll be receiving an angrier titular X-Man. Looking towards the future now, Logan will be seeing exactly how his lifelong youth and healing factor affects any kind of life he’ll try to set in place for the road ahead while we’ll finally be seeing the classic berzerker rage that the hero uses in the comics. For this, Jackman spent the most time he’s ever had to prepare physically for the role and his muscular vein-filled appearance is to match that of his animalistic moniker.
Finally, Jackman confirmed there would in fact be mutants but the prime villain will be kept a mystery for the remainder of the plot. Though The Silver Samurai will clash steel with Wolverine, one of the more prominent female antagonists in Wolverine’s line-up Viper is sure to play a massive part of the overall story.
Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee as villain Kenuichio Harada or as he’s best known in the comics The Silver Samurai, Hiroyuki Sanada (Revenge, Lost) as Shingen; veteran actor Hal Yamanouchi (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) as Yashida; and new discoveries Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima as Mariko and Yukio, respectively, The Wolverine is currently scheduled for a release on July 26th, 2013.
