For awhile now, it’s been a widely known fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. will play a heavy role in the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. On the heels of Frank Grillo confirmed to play villain Crossbones, he joins previously confirmed S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that including returning cast members Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. Now, we can count one more prominent player to return with this key cast of assassin’s and government-controlled operatives as we can now count on one of the newest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to return as well.
Along with Grillo’s casting news, Variety has snuck in that Colbie Smulders will be returning as Agent Maria Hill in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This will be her second appearance as the character following her introduction as a major role at Nick Fury’s side while her comic book persona showcases that she later challenges Fury and actually guns for his job as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., which can be seen to a minimal degree in the alternate opening of The Avengers.
Smulders joins Jackson, Johansson, actor Chris Evans playing the titular hero and Sebastian Stan who are all reprising their roles previously established in the MCU thus far. While Grillo will play an all-new antagonist, Anthony Mackie will join the heroes as new superhero Falcon. No word yet on whether or not we’ll have a tie-in to Red Skull, but Hugo Weaving has recently voiced a lack of enthusiasm to reprise his role.
Smulders is currently shooting her eighth season of How I Met Your Mother, which could be the final year of the hit comedy as a ninth year has still been in talks. With the sequel set to go into production this March, it’s unclear how this will affect her schedule in terms of shooting both the show and the film but her scenes could easily be delayed until her role as Robin wraps up for the year.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is slated for release on April 4th, 2014.
