This weekend, production has just begun north of the border on a remake that has truly divided plenty of fans: Robocop. Though the upcoming redux won’t be nearly as violent as the 80s cult classic, there have been rumors regarding the script that definitely have many skeptical while Sony has been trying to persuade the public that come next summer the action blockbuster will be worth grabbing a seat in theaters. With an intriguing cast in place, today the first spy photos from the set have hit the internet to give us a look at both the male and female leads along with the modern look that come not only with Robocop’s armor but his police cruiser as well.
In the photos below, we don’t get too good of a look at the new armor but it’s a drastic change from what fans of the franchise are certainly used to. The stealth-like battle suit is just one of multiple versions set to pop up within the film, while the classic 80s incarnation will be Robocop 1.0. The black armor is said to have nearly a transparent visor at times when the titular hero is not up against enemies, though here we see a darker version that certainly has the recognizable red-line going across the front.
he brief glimpses of Cornish and the car aren’t nearly as memorable, though the futuristic matte look on the cruiser does appear to have a nod of the design style in which the film will be going. While many have been quick to judge the suit as having a “Batman” style appearance, it seems this leak online may propel Sony to release the first official images this following week with an official production announcement.
In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
With a cast that includes Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Hugh Laurie with direction by Jose Padilha, Robocop is currently set for release on August 9th, 2013.
