In July, we told you that Sebastian Stan had signed up to return as his character of Jefferson in the second season of the fairy tale drama hit Once Upon a Time. The only question in the matter remained just when the fan-favorite role would pop back up. By the sound of it, Stan had stated that he had already wound up back on set while there had yet to be an official confirmation as to whether or not the Alice in Wonderland character would indeed be back. Now, co-creator Adam Horowitz has decided to finally reveal that our man in the hat will indeed return this fall.
Speaking with TV Line, Horowitz has confirmed that Sebastian Stan will return for no less than three episodes for Once Upon a Time Season 2, which will be a part of a story arc in the first batch of episodes when the series returns. “And he doesn’t just show up to say, ‘Hey, I’m still here.’,” the writer says. “He has his own story, because his daughter is still out there.”
Word has it that Stan was being courted as a possible series regular after his successful guest role this past Spring at the tail-end of the show’s first season but with the actor set to venture off in order to shoot Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it seems we’ll just have to see Jefferson in brief doses for now. The actor previously spoke about what’s to come with Jefferson in an interview promoting Political Animals, saying ”I think he’ll be just as much affected by everything, but the desire for him has not changed. He still wants that reunion with the daughter.”
“Also, you have to remember, he’s known all along before everybody else that this was going to happen, so this is not a big surprise to him. From where he comes from, it’s like ‘Oh, good. Now everybody is going to see what I’ve been talking about over and over again, but no one was listening to me.’ He’s seen all this coming.”
What will be interesting to see is how the curse being broken not only affects Jefferson but his daughter Grace as well. In the season finale Jefferson made a deal with Regina that he did not want Grace to remember, afraid that it would create some sort of emotional hell as she’s torn between her surrogate family and her biological father. Instead he optioned for Regina to make him forget, though now with the curse broken that no longer seems like a possibility. So how exactly will the new truth affect his relationship with his daughter? That will likely be a large focus for the character’s story ahead.
Stan joins fellow surprise return stars Bailee Madison and Barbara Hershey who have been both confirmed their return on the Once Upon a Time set during the filming of Season 2. They are expected to appear in the second episode of the season, as Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have stated we will be flashing back once again to Regina’s past to detail just how she became evil, her first meeting with Rumplestiltskin and more. Actor Noah Bean has been confirmed to return as Regina’s lost love Daniel, though it’s unclear whether or not he’ll take part in the episode.
Once Upon a Time will return Sunday September 30th at 8PM on ABC.
