Following the events that transpired in The Avengers, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Joss Whedon has introduced significant deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (some in more ways than one judging by Thanos’ mid-credits tease as well). While fans are still mourning the death of the beloved character who fell at the hands of Loki in this year’s team-up, we still have eight months to move forward as Phase Two of the MCU kicks off with Iron Man 3.
As Thor: The Dark World is currently in production as well, we had our first taste of what’s to come with the Asgardian hero as set photos showing Thor and Sif finally surfaced. But could one of them be in actual trouble of winding up in a grave themselves? The latest batch of rumors suggest that not everyone who’s on hand for the upcoming series will make it out alive.
WARNING: Some spoilers may follow. Read at your own caution.
A source tells Bleeding Cool that one of the main characters forThor: The Dark World ”will be killed off before the end credits roll”. While we may easily consider Thor, Jane Foster and Loki to be among those guaranteed safe, some other members of the troupe may be more questionable. Newcomer villain Malekith the Accursed seems like an obvious candidate, while others such as Odin, Darcy, Dr. Selvig, and even one of The Warriors Three all remain in jeopardy.
Now Odin remains perhaps the most likeliest candidate of them all given that the elder King of Asgard was knocking on death’s door once before. We know that battle to be the next king is still an ongoing feud between both Thor and Loki, so to see Thor possibly thrust into the role of king following the death of Odin would certainly be an interesting plot development. One source told the site they were certain it would be Odin, though eventually expressed skepticism after talking over the rumor.
Then again with rumors that Doctor Strange could appear at the right hand of Jane Foster, the future isn’t exactly looking so strong for Dr. Selvig if the rumors are believed to be true. Perhaps his character’s departure, or even Darcy’s for that matter, comes at the cost of introducing a major Marvel character into play in order for a job vacancy to open up for an easy transition.
Regardless, we don’t even know if this rumor is true just yet so we would take this with a grain of salt for the time being.
Thor: The Dark World, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Zachary Levi, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Kat Dennings and more, hits theaters on November 8th, 2013.
