Now that a director/writer has been confirmed for the upcoming project, Guardians of the Galaxy has been gaining some great traction as we head into an inevitable production start in 2013. Though plot details are currently being kept under wraps, we know that Thanos will resurface as the major threat in order to prepare audiences for his reign as antagonist in The Avengers 2. But the biggest question has been just who will be cast as the heroes that will battle The Mad Titan. While he’s not an official part of The Guardians,Friday Night Lights actor Scott Porter has revealed that he would like to slap on a pair of tights to assist the main group of heroes in their fight against the death-obsessed antagonist.
Speaking with MTV, Porter was asked just what role he would like to tackle next. “Marvel just announced that they’re doing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ which is another property that I love. I read it growing up,” He says.”I’d love to play Nova or another [cosmic character].”
In the comics, Nova is a member of the intergalactic peace squad Nova Corps after New York high school student Richard Rider is chosen to join the space militia. He is given the powers of super-strength, flight and the ability to project energy into blasts. The character has long been rumored to be a part of the film, along with Adam Warlock. Due to his recent resurfacing in the comics along with an important supporting character in the new television series Ultimate Spider-Man, speculation has increased that Marvel is gearing up for a cinematic bow.
Further flexing his inner fanboy, Porter spoke about confirmed writer and director James Gunn at the helm of the upcoming film. “Gunn is a unique choice. I think he could be a really great shepherd for that property. I think ‘Guardians’ is going to be a lot of fun. I think it’ll be very cool. I thought the next thing I might try and go after is ‘Heroes for Hire,’ but it looks like ‘Guardians’ is around, so…”
However even if the actor doesn’t play Nova, Porter reveals that one of his career goals will be to slap on a costume at some point. “I think any kid who gets into the acting business, they have a couple of things that they always wanted to do. For me, it was like, play a war hero; play an athlete, which I’ve gotten to do; die a horrible death in a horror movie, which I’ve gotten to do; and then be a superhero. I’ve marked two things off the list, and I’m working on the others.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.
