Doctor Strange Rumored To Be Introduced and Play A Major Role in ‘Thor: The Dark World’

When the clock turned to 2012, it seemed as if the rumors for a possible Doctor Strange film began to heat up for the character’s appearance to solidify himself within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However somewhere along the way, the rumors of the character finally coming to life were lost among the reports of Black PantherAnt-ManGuardians of the Galaxyand so many more eventually moving forward. But where does this leave Marvel’s intelligent sorcerer?

While Marvel Studios has been filled to the brim with sequels as Phase Two of the MCU finally starts to sink in, there’s still plenty of unknown heights to come as Marvel plans out our next round of films leading up to The Avengers 2. Now, a new rumor states that perhaps the Doctor Strange rumblings have a purpose: to be included in the upcoming sequel revolving around Asgard’s God of Thunder.

ScreenRant reports that a new rumor has surfaced that states in next year’s Thor: The Dark World ”Strange would be playing a big part in ‘all three acts’ of the film” while his background as a surgeon would change so that “He would play a scientist…[and will] be working alongside Dr. Strange in a similar capacity as she did with Stellan Skarsgård’s Dr. Erik Selvig in the first film”. Strange will be “someone who’s deeply interested in Foster’s stories and knowledge about Asgard and Thor”.

It’s unclear whether the sequel would debut Strange’s powers in which he learns the Mystic Arts, though that his introduction would like be before his origins story in order to see just how audiences would react to the character. Furthermore, it’s likely that Strange would be cast with an A-lister in mind in order to lock a possible leading man for a future solo-film, but as of right now nothing is set in stone.

Talk of Strange started earlier this year when theoretical physicist Sean Caroll from Cal Tech, who assisted Marvel in an advisory role for the science of Thor, revealed that he would be working with Marvel Studios again to apply limits to Doctor Strange’s set of powers. Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are said to be working on a script that is aiming for a low budget, but it’s unclear just exactly what Marvel may have planned.

We’d take a grain of salt with this report for the time being, but it’s clear that Marvel is attempting to build up a third phase for the MCU already. Talks of Black Panther surfaced earlier this year, while Ant-Man chatter seem to point for the Edgar Wright feature to sneak in just under the wire before The Avengers 2in 2015.

We’ll keep you updated as information progresses.

Thor: The Dark World, directed by Alan Taylor and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Kat Dennings, Stellan Skarsgard, Zachary Levi, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Christopher Eccleston, Anthony Hopkins and more, is currently set for release on November 8th, 2013.
