Premiering at the Venice International Film Festival earlier today, the buzzed about indie that is said to have plenty of raunch is Spring Breakers. Taking a couple of notable ex-Disney stars and thrusting them into a feature that involves robbery, gangsters, murder and more, the first impressions of the dramedy have hit today as it hoped to gain some forward momentum towards release as its on display today.
While we have only received a couple of sneak peeks regarding any actual footage, it seems that will all seek to change today as the company responsible for this month’s The Master have picked up the rights to bring Spring Breakers to a theater near you.
Annapurna Pictures have bought the rights to distribute Spring Breakers in Early 2013, with details regarding said release currently thin. The company has received plenty of publicity due to the much buzzed about Oscar flick The Master which hits theaters later this month while they will also be responsible for the next films for Spike Jonze and David O. Russell.
There have been a slew of reactions to the film thus far, with some calling Franco’s performance fantastic and funny while others express that the controversial angle tossed around is far from what was hyped. Reception seems to ultimately be on the positive side, calling it crazy fun with some cool visual effects. Whether or not that will hold up come time when a wide release hits remains to be seen.
Spring Breakers focuses on four college main characters who land in the slammer for holding up a fast food joint in order to pay to go to Spring Break in Florida. A rapping drug dealer named Alien (James Franco) decides to spring them while he entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer named Arch.
Starring Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rachel Korine, the film is directed by Harmony Korine with a release aimed for sometime in Spring 2013.
