Earlier this year, the latest batch of rumors regarding Bill & Ted 3 kicked off as Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are both still strongly involved and hoping for the best. With a script in play from the original creators, the third time-travel adventure has long been slowly gestating but never really amounting to much. As it’s always been likely still there are plenty of business related materials that must occur first before the film is put into production.
But with the braintrust of the franchise still very much empowered to bring the duo back to the big screen, it’s hard to say whether or not this will become a reality. Now, Bill & Ted 3 inches closer to reality as the creators have now attached a director to come aboard for the next outing.
Vulture reports that Bill & Ted creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson have attached Dean Parisot to direct the upcoming sequel based off of their script. Parisot is known best for his cult hit comedy Galaxy Quest and will be directing the Bruce Willis sequel RED 2 kicking off production sometime in the next month.
The goal is for the comedy to be a mid-budget feature, but as of right now there is no studio attached. MGM owns the rights and with the company not in great financial stability following their bankruptcy filing that put multiple films on the shelf, they’ll likely want to co-finance the film with another studio.
Vulture says that MGM is currently shopping around the script, actors, and Parisot package in the hopes that it can break a deal with someone willing to bring forth the money. What also works in the sequel’s favor happens to be that MGM has some time to search. Bill & Ted 3 won’t film until Parisot is finished with RED 2, which likely puts a production start sometime next year.
Solomon and Matheson are busy in the meanwhile finishing their Lionsgate horror-comedy Rapturepalooza with Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley, which “follows two teens who must brave the apocalypse and defeat the Antichrist”.
With a dedicated group of people involved, it seems that now more than ever it’s time to go on another excellent adventure.
We’ll have more in the future as MGM hopefully finds a financial deal great enough to fund the film.
