Marvel Officially Sets 2015 Release Date for ‘The Avengers 2′

With the one of the biggest films in box office history, Marvel’sThe Avengers has been gearing up for a sequel for some time now. Though Marvel has set their films through 2014, rumors have persisted that a 2015 release date was also likely for the highly anticipated sequel. Now that the director/writer for the film has been set, Marvel Studios can begin its plans to lead up to the next major superhero team-up sure to put plenty of audiences in seats. Today, the company has decided that they want to work towards that prime goal yet again for Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has finally set a release date for The Avengers 2.

Marvel Studios has announced that The Avengers 2 is now set to be released on May 1st, 2015. This comes roughly one week after Joss Whedon signed a deal with Disney and Marvel to stay on through June 2015, returning as writer and director for the sequel while also helping them develop a Marvel-related pilot for ABC that would be connected to the MCU in some form.

So for those of you keeping tabs at home, here’s what the schedule for Phase Two currently looks like:

Iron Man 3 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2013.
Thor: The Dark World brings thunder back to audiences on November 8th, 2013.
Captain America: The Winter Solider will be released on April 4th, 2014.
Guardians of the Galaxy will debut an all-new set of characters on August 1st, 2014.
The Avengers 2 will assemble on May 1st, 2015.

As to when The Avengers 2 will shoot is currently unknown for right now. Another big hurdle may be signing Robert Downey Jr. back on as Tony Stark in an overall deal, as his current one is set to run out following Iron Man 3. The actor was recently injured on set, delaying production of the sequel.

There is still no word as to when Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man will fit into the equation but word has had that Wright is aiming to have cameras roll in London between Spring and Summer of 2013, meaning we could see Hank Pym sneak in either June or July of 2014. Either that or we could have another Thanksgiving release on our hands as well. Marvel has yet to confirm or deny these plans.

What do you think of the announcement?
