Earlier today, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire nabbed another significant casting update as Pulp Fiction star Amanda Plummer joined the film which brought the first new female face to the anticipated sequel. However, what fans really want to know are just who will be portraying fan-favorites Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason. While it’s been said that Jena Malone will be taking the role of Johanna, Finnick’s casting process has been a slippery slope that has been full of rumors. Now, a new report claims that Lionsgate may have who will be Finnick after all this time.
Zap2It reports that multiple sources have confirmed to them that Sam Claflin has officially signed on as Finnick. Claflin most recently was seen in Snow White and the Huntsman early last month, and a role in Catching Fire could really turn him into a breakout star. Lionsgate would not comment on the casting due to their policy regarding rumors.
In the novels, Finnick is a 24 year old victor of The Hunger Games who won the 65th outing of the titular fight ot the death when he was 14. Due to a twist thanks to the next Hunger Games being a part of “a quarter quell”, the next fight has the misfortune of casting previous victors of the games into the annual bloodbath. Finnick is chosen along with volunteer 80 year old Mags for District 4, while Katniss and Peeta will return to the place where they showmanced it up in the last film.
Other rumored actors in the wheelhouse for Finnick happen to be Lucas Till, Hunter Parrish (Weeds), Garrett Hedlund, and Armie Hammer.
Francis Lawrence will be taking over directorial duties onCatching Fire, which is aiming for a fall production start, and will be based off of a script from Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3).
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set for a release on November 22nd, 2013.
