In a place filled with science fiction, one of San Diego Comic-Con’s most intriguing promotions happens to be coming from Sony Pictures as director Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 follow-upElysium is ready for a first look unveiling. Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, the project has certainly gained plenty of talk especially with Blomkamp’s last effort being an Oscar-nominated one. With less than a few hours until the convention is open to the public, select panels and booths are being placed together right now for their first impressions. And whileElyisum may be looking to make a splash, it’s what one advance screening attendee said that may have the most impact.
ComingSoon posted the following photo from the Comic-Con floor currently prepping for preview night, and it seems Elysium is planning something big for attendees. It’s unclear what’s beyond the walls at this point, but we’ll bring you more updates as the convention progresses (click to get a larger look):
Slashfilm‘s Peter Sciretta meanwhile tweeted that he ran into one early viewer of the film, and that their reception of the feature was certainly enthusiastic. “Ran into someone who saw Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium and was over the moon about it, claiming its better than Blade Runner. He also said says its Matt Damon’s best performance to date. Count me even more excited…”
The film is currently said to be showcased at Sony’s extended film panel on Friday at Comic-Con in Hall H.
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can.
When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Co-starring Diego Luna, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner ad more, Elysium is scheduled to hit on March 1st, 2013.
