Though its still a year away, Columbia Pictures is planning to really showcase After Earth in just a couple of weeks at San Diego Comic-Con as the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film will be receiving its own panel. What exactly we’ll be seeing is unknown, especially seeing how the movie has been in production for around four months know and there’s a slim chance we could see some early footage from the upcoming sci-fi drama. But, if there’s one thing very mysterious aboutAfter Earth, it’s the story. Now thanks to the SDCC schedule, we’re able to dive deeper into that plot as an all-new description of the film has been revealed.
Via Filmofilia:
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
Unfortunately, the panel won’t feature too many big names as neither of the Smiths, Zoe Kravitz, or even director M. Night Shyamalan himself will be a part of the member assembled. Instead, screenwriter Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and director of photography Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back) will be joined by comic book artist Beni Lobel, and writers Robert Greenberger and Michael Friedman — the creators of the comic book After Earth: Innocence. It’s unclear if there are any surprises in store, but if you’re interested you can head to the panel at the convention on Saturday July 14th from 10-11AM PST in Room 6A.
Starring, Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Zoe Kravitz, Isabelle Fuhrman, Sophie Okonedo, Kristoffer Hivju, and Gabriel Caste, After Earth hits theaters on June 7th, 2013.
