When Buzz, Woody, and the gang all set off into the sunset in 2010, the toys weren’t completely gone forever. One year later, they showed up on the big screen yet again in front of Cars 2 with the Toy Story Toons short Hawaiian Vacation. Later that year, the Toys were back with Small Fry in front of The Muppets. After being embraced by both fans and critics alike, it seems Disney and Pixar know a hit when they see one. Now, Toy Story Toons will be coming in a much longer form as they go from theaters to your TV.
According to a Disney Publishing Worldwide e-catalogue (viaCollider), a read-along storybook for Toy Story’s Small Fry is shown with a brief description on the Toy Story Toons so far. The paragraph ends saying ”in addition, two new 22-minute TV specials are in the works for October 2013 and Spring 2014.” With commericials factored in, both specials equal a half hour long events.
Now, it’s unclear just where the specials plan to air or if the entire original cast will be returning. ABC or Disney Channel are the obvious outlets, and Disney is no stranger to premiering all-new specials on television as they tried it out earlier this year with Tangled After Ever, the epilogue short that focused on the wedding of Flynn Rider and Rapunzel. Furthermore, the half hour format is nothing Pixar has been a stranger too either with the Prep & Landing Christmas specials on ABC and ABC Family.
The half hour format is something that easily extends the Toy Story Toons, which most hae pointed out are easily just joke after joke. Surprisingly, the jokes still all hit incredibly well given the short time, but it doesn’t exactly give us the same emotions that we’ve experienced throughout a big screen effort. Give the longer time, perhaps that signature Pixar heart could be inserted.
We’ll update you with anymore information as the specials as details are revealed in the future.
