With Sony Animation looking to make a splash later this year with Hotel Transylvania, the studio is also focusing on creating a sequel to one of its hit films Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. With a second film already beginning, we still have a little less than two years until the film actually hits the big screen. Most of the original cast are expected to return to voice their goofy and lovable band of characters, and now it seems one more comedic actress is joining the party.
THR reports that Kristen Schaal (The Daily Show, Bob’s Burgers) will join Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers as an orangutan. Seeing how the original film featured Steve, a monkey who could communicate through a speak and spell translator (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris), it’s likely that the same kind of technology will be used for Schaal’s role…maybe even as a love interest for the tiny little sidekick.
Schaal joins a cast that includes Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, and Bobb’e J. Thompson. No one else besides Schaal has been confirmed just yet, but it’s expected that at least Hader, Faris, Samberg, and Caan will return after playing vital roles in the first film.
The sequel takes place directly following the events of Cloudy, as the citizens of Swallow Falls forcefully depart following the food-filled catastrophe that had been thankfully at the climax of the orignal feature. When it’s discovered that food beasts have now overtaken the island and pose a threat to the outside world, Flint and the gang are asked to return to their hometown in order to defeat the monsters, and save the world from certain food-related disaster yet again.
Directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, Cloudy 2 is expected to be released on February 7th, 2014.
