With Comic-Con right around the corner, anything is bound to happen. Except this year, a major milestone is marked by the short-lived sci-fi hit that has had people talking for years:Firefly. Interestingly enough, this is also the year Joss Whedon truly impressed a worldwide audience with his directorial box office breaker The Avengers. And while Whedon usually shows up at Comic-Con, it’d be hard to say just what panels the director/writer would be involved in so far. Now, it seems it’s time to find Serenity as Whedon just may be showing up to mark a major Firefly celebration.
SDCC Blog reports that Firefly executive producer Tim Minear has confirmed a 10th Anniversary panel for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Details are scarce right now, but with Minear in attendance, it’s expected that other cast and crew members are to be a part of the panel.
Nathan Fillion’s Castle will be MIA from any type of panel promotion this year at the gigantic event, but Fillion himself has been known to always pop up at Comic-Con to celebrate and bask in the nerd culture. However, it should also be noted that with television filming kicking off in July, it’s unclear just who may be able to slink away in order to make it to the panel. Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, and Jewel Staite all have series currently airing on television, while Adam Baldwin, Ron Glass, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau seem to have open schedules for the time being.
Airing on FOX in late 2002, Firefly is a space western that deals with the nine crew members of the spaceship Serenity. While missions and adventures varied every episode, one of the overarching story concept revolved around River Tam (Glau) and her brother Simon (Maher). River was seen as a child prodigy who was experimented on, and displays side effects due to the treatments. However, it’s later revealed she is actually a psychic.
The series was succeeded by two comic mini-series and the 2005 feature film Serenity. Following its cancellation, Firefly has had a legacy that propelled the series into cult hit territory, gaining massive success and fans many years later.
We’ll keep you updated on the panel as more information becomes available.
