Jim Parsons and Rihanna Cast In Dreamworks Animation’s Sci-Fi Adaptation ‘Happy Smekday!’

Rihanna

Both Jim Parsons and Rihanna have found great success off of the big screen and in other means of entertainment. While Rihanna is a Grammy award winning chart-topper with a loyal number of fans, Parsons is an Emmy award winning actor for his work on ratings giant The Big Bang Theory. However, both have yet to find a theatrical feature that really plants them into box office success. Now, the two are combining their star power and their voices for Dreamworks Animation’s latest project.

THR reports that both actors will be the leads of Dreamwork’sHappy Smekday!, an adaptation of the the book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. Director Tim Johnson (Antz,Over the Hedge) will be helming this latest adventure, with Get Smart screenwriters Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember penning the film.

“In Smekday!, a friendly alien race invades Earth and uses it as a hideout from their mortal enemy. When one lowly alien accidentally notifies the enemies of his whereabouts, he is forced to go on the run with a teenage girl, embarking on a comical road trip across a postapocalyptic America and learning what it really means to be human.”

This will serve as Rihanna’s voice acting debut after her feature debut in last month’s Battleship, while Parsons has done just small guest pieces in animation before. The idea of a post-apocalypse animated film certainly sounds gloomy, but we’ve treaded similar ground before with Wall-E‘s trash filled Earth and environmental message. What exactly the film has in store has yet to be shown, though the book has an emotional undertone between the main character and her mother which the story could be built around along with the bonding between human and alien.

While in the source material the aliens invade on Christmas Eve, Happy Smekday! currently is aiming for an undetermined release date of late 2014.
