It’s been awhile since we’ve Broken Lizard on the big screen. Though their last effort was 2009′s The Slammin’ Salmon, the film never received a wide release. While it’s been on DVD racks and Comedy Central, it seems unfitting for the geniuses behind Beerfest and Super Troopers. Now, it seems another film may get lost in the summer slate, but has quite the promising look. The Babymakers will be the troupe’s next outing, while only feature a few of the members on-screen. But, with some impressive leads, could the film be the sleeper comedic smash of the year?
While there are some jokes that fall incredibly flat, the sense of comedic timing from both Olivia Munn and Paul Schneider is fantastic and there are some big laughs in this trailer when the comedy hits the right notes. It can be a bit shaky, and a film without the usual band of actors can cause some fans to be a bit skeptical. Still, director and actor Jay Chandrasekhar is still there along with supporting actor Kevin Heffernan, which should bring some fans to support the title. Also, the premise is very relatable and grounded. There’s no slasher parody at work, there’s no bumbling cops, and there are no major beer competitions. It’s just a man and wife thrust into an unfortunate situation, and it’s there that the film really gains some humanity that can be a bit lacking in the troupe’s other comedies.
After trying everything to get his wife Audrey (Olivia Munn) pregnant, Tommy Macklin (Paul Schneider) realizes to his horror that he may be “shooting blanks.” Terrified that his marriage may fall apart, Tommy recruits his friends to rob a sperm bank where he made a deposit years ago. As with any half-baked scheme, everything can and does go wrong, testing the limits of Tommy and Audrey’s relationship and showing how far one couple will go in hopes of getting pregnant.
The Babymakers hits theaters in limited release and VOD on iTunes August 3rd.
