MGM has certainly put the upcoming Robocop remake on the fast track in the hopes of getting filming started very soon. With already three big names attached to the action redux, the studio is hoping to cast some impressive stars to line up what is starting to seem like a big summer tentpole. While the ensemble is currently an all-male line up, it seems now MGM wants to add a female to the titular hero’s side as one actress who had a decent 2011 is ready to take the spotlight.
Deadline reports that Sucker Punch star Abbie Cornish has been offered the female lead role of Robocop. If taken, Cornish will play the wife of main character Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) who believes she has become a widow after his deadly accident turned robotic experiment. Cornish would be the fourth name to become attached to the action remake as she would join Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Samuel L. Jackson.
The story of Robocop, from writer Josh Zetumer, follows Officer Murphy who upon the brink of his death is brought back to life to become a crime fighting cyborg. Oldman will play the character of Norton, the conflicted scientist who creates the cyborg and wants Murphy to reconnect with his humanity but at the same time has to meet the needs of the corporation for which he is employed. Jackson, on the other hand, will be playing the role of Pat Novak, simply described as “a charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world”.
Cornish is look to break out after a being included in a few films in 2011, including the Zack Snyder disappointment Sucker Punch, the Bradley Cooper-starring Limitless, and the romantic drama directed by Madonna W.E. Her role as female lead in the upcoming summer blockbuster could certainly thrust her more in the mainstream, especially as Robocop is very much a high-profile project.
Directed by Jose Padilha, Robocop is scheduled to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013, with principal photography hoping to start in Toronto this September.
