USA Gives Mini-Series ‘Political Animals’ Premiere Date, ‘Heroes’ Star Joins Cast

It seems Peter Petrelli was destined for presidency after all.

USA’s upcoming mini-series Political Animals has had plenty of uncertainty. When the network announced its upcoming summer slate, the show was interestingly enough left on the bench. With production just beginning in Philadelphia, the big names that comprise the cast are ready to become bigger. And with the news that an actor from Heroes will star in a role that’s pretty familiar, there also comes the announcement of just when the show will premiere.

Deadline reports that the six-episode series will premiere at 10PM on July 15th, and that Adrian Pasdar has signed up to play President Paul Garcetti. Pasdar has had experience playing a political character before, as his character in HeroesNathan Petrelli was a New York senator, with even future appiritions pointing him towards the oval office. Now, it certainly seems like Pasdar is made for the Commander in Chief role, though he may not be a character everyone is rooting for.

Described as “a smart man who uses every resource at his disposal to his advantage”, President Garcetti defeated Sigourney Weaver’s character of Elaine, a former First Lady, in the preisdental primary. However, he “then appointed her as his Secretary of State…deftly [employing] Elaine’s popularity to deflect unwanted attention.” Adding to the picture, Carla Gugino plays a D.C. journalist who is fueled to find any dirt to destroy Elaine, while Weaver’s character ”tries to keep her family together while simultaneously dealing with crisis of the State Department.”

Political Animals comes from Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, with Berlanti writing and directed the first episode. The series also stars Sebastian Stan, James Wolk, Brittany Ishibashi, Ellen Burstyn, and more. It’s not expected to go anywhere past its six-episode run, but mini-series do have the tendency to eventually turn into full-out series on USA (Debra Messing’s The Starter Wife for example).
