Summit Announces Release Date for ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’

It’s been an incredible long road for the upcoming adaptationThe Perks of Being a Wallflower. Originally filmed last summer, the film has had a long and rocky road to the big screen and has set on the shelf for what’s already been over a year. The incredible cast of young actors is certainly one that should bring audiences in, and yet Summit hasn’t marketed the film in any capacity for some time besides releasing stills. Now, the distributor is finally ready to move the movie forward, and has announced that Perks finally has a release date.

Summit has announced a limited release has been set for September 14th, with the possibility it could go wide in the weeks following. The first trailer for the film will be presented at next Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, likely to be presented by a few of the movie’s stars.

The film, starring Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Paul Rudd, Nina Dobrev, Mae Whitman, Kate Walsh, Dylan McDermott, and more, the adaptation was filmed by the novel’s author Stephen Chbosky early last summer. It’s described as A funny and touching adventure based on a best-selling novel that has sold over a million copies in the U.S. and has been published in 16 countries and 13 languages, that is a modern classic about a shy, sensitive teenager (Lerman) caught between trying to live his life and escape it.

Previously, the film had received an R-rating by the MPAA before Summit appealed, which resulted in an overturn in the decision. Now, the film is rated PG-13 “for mature thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content including references, and a fight – all involving teens.”
