Earlier today, we told you that the cast for Machete Kills just got bigger with an Oscar-nominated actor and an all-new addition to the kickass female division of the ensemble. with Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez confirmed to return, Jessica Alba still remains very much in tow in terms of the cast that is returning. Now, it seems the females are about to become even stronger as one of television’s leading comedic actresses is now joining the violent sequel.
Variety reports that Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) is in talks to join Machete Kills in an anti-hero role. She’ll be playing ”the leather-clad Madame Desdemona, whose Mexican harlots have information that Machete needs.” I’m sure a few male audience members wouldn’t mind seeing Vergara in a leather outfit for sure, as well as flexing some vicious and violent action chops on top of that.
She’s one of four confirmed newcomers to be heading to the film, alongside main villain Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, and Amber Heard. Heard will be playing an undercover assassin with her looks adding to her cover, while Bichir’s role is currently under wraps. The sequel is said to “the titular ex-federale (Trejo) recruited by the U.S. government to stop an arms dealer (Gibson) from launching a deadly missile.”
Vergara has been nominated for two Emmys and a Golden Globe for her role in Modern Family, as well as recently appearing in The Smurfs, New Year’s Eve, and The Three Stooges. Vergara is set to return to the children’s franchise inThe Smurfs 2, which just began production in New York City, and is slated for a release in July 2013.
The film is currently on track to being production within the next month, and will begin filming in Austin, Texas. Robert Rodriguez returns to direct before he heads off to helm his other sequel Sin City 2 later this summer. Machete Kills will be released by Dimension Films at an undetermined date in 2013.
