When it comes to the horror genre these days, there’s been this feeling that you would need some kind of element to separate yourself from the mundane competition. Now that found footage is something that audiences are getting somewhat sick of, perhaps its time for a new genre. A remake for the cult hit Maniac has been in the works for the past year, and with Elijah Wood as the titular psycho the film seeks to do something incredibly unique by telling the entire film from the direct point of view of the usual villain. Now, the full length red band trailer for Maniac has been released, and it looks very promising.

Easily one of the most interesting pieces of the film happens to be a variety of things. Not only is Wood’s performance strong, but the way in which the feature is shot as if we are Wood’s character is definitely a new step in the horror game. The vivid amounts of horror, along with the seeming descent into insanity all adds up to what looks like one hell of a film if it lives up to the impression. While that crown is easily taken by Cabin in the Woods, it’ll be interesting to see if Maniac can reinvent your typical slasher film that has grown just plain dull.
Maniac currently has no U.S. release date, and was directed by Franck Khalfoun with a script from Alejandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D).
