Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler Reuniting for ‘They Came Together’

Rudd & Poehler

Fans of Parks & Rec and Wet Hot American Summer alike have recently been enjoying the latest story arc of the series, which sees Amy Poehler’s character of Leslie Knope face off against Bobby Newport for city council, with Newport played by Paul Rudd. It’s really the first time the two have reunited on-screen since their 2001 cult-hit comedy, and the two have become huge stars in the years that have passed. Now, the two will be reuniting on the big screen this time along with the director ofWHAS to give romantic comedies their long due satire.

Variety reports that Rudd and Poehler will reunite with director David Wain for They Came Together, a romantic comedy parody that Lionsgate will finance in a microbudget capacity and distribute. The script was written by Wain and frequent collaborator Michael Showalter right after WHAS‘ release, but has since spent years struggling to get developed. A July shoot is now expected, with Showalter producing as well.

The film is described as, “When Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) meet, it’s hate at first sight; his big corporation is the one that threatens to shut down her quirky knick-knack story. The story, which follows their predictably on-again/off-again relationship, features rom-com staples such as the jealous ex-girlfriend, the office jerk, scary in-laws, a boring dentist, a wise dog and beautiful shots of New York City in autumn.”

Wain and Showalter have also said a sequel to WHAS is in the works now, but with They Came Together, that’s likely been put on the backburner for the time being. Rudd has been a part of every Wain film so far, including this year’s most recent effortWanderlust starring Rudd and Aniston. Rudd stars in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Judd Apatow’s upcoming This is 40, while he’s set to reprise his role for Anchorman 2 when filming begins early next year.

Poehler hasn’t appeared on screen since her direct-to-video flop Spring Breakdown, which was preceded by her 2008 filmBaby Mama. Since then, Poehler has stuck to voice acting for many films, including most recently the Studio Ghibli film The Secret World of Arrietty.

No word on when They Came Together will be released, but it could be likely for an Early 2013 debut. Until then, you can catch Poehler and Rudd in the season finale of Parks & Rectonight at 9:30 on NBC.
