Earlier this year when Lionsgate acquired Summit, when one of the first plans that the studio president had originally said he would be looking into would be to expand the life of Twilight. While a film continuation obviously seems probable on a slim chance, another example happened to be a television series. Well apparently Lionsgate has TV on the brain as the studio is now looking into bringing some film franchises to television as original series.
Deadline reports that CEO Jon Feltheimer is looking into possibly bringing The Expendables, RED, and Step Up into television series. No further details were spun off, but the internet has certainly begun speculating as to what the series could possibly consist of.
On The Expendables front, there’s obviously a large history involved with the characters as we drop in on them during the first movie. What a television series could do is gain a younger cast that shows the formation of the group as the series goes on. The show could start off with small mercenary missions with just a few members, and then as the years expand, so could the team.
The same could be said for a series like RED. We could venture into the characters’ past as we experience their lives before the feature film. Step Up, on the other hand, is a different story. Each film has changed narrative hands, and perhaps the best way to bring the film franchise to television would be to have the series grounded at the Maryland School of the Arts (mentioned in the second film) or another professional dance school or company.
No concrete developments about any series have yet come forth, so the shows are considering simply an idea or in very early development right now. There’s no guarantee that they will come to TV, but it certainly is a possibility.
