With The Avengers officially dethroned from the top of the box office, the superhero hit will be headed home on Blu-Ray soon enough. With fans still anxiously waiting for the next Marvel has to bring, Comic-Con is right around the corner and likely to settle that for itself. Now, Preisdent of Production Kevin Feige was able to sit down and discuss what is in the Marvel movie future, with perhaps the biggest detail to date about the unknown film that will hit in 2014.
In an interview with Empire (via CBM), Feige was able to talk about just what’s coming up next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First up, he started with Thor 2. Now last week, actor Mads Mikkelsen was revealed to be in talks to be an undescribed new villain in the upcoming sequel, which set the internet on fire with speculation. Now, Feige not only talks Thor 2, but also debunks the rumor that Thanos may show up as the core antagonist.
When asked about Thanos, Feige simply said “No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist…” That antagonist is likely the one Mikkelsen is discussing to possibly be, but no further details have yet surfaced.
Feige did reveal plenty of new details about the sequel. “We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster.”
While that’s all he would say on next winter’s sequel, he did discuss Iron Man 3 in some length as well. Amongst the discussion, the question popped up if the true “Demon in a Bottle” storyline would pop up into the films after it was somewhat hinted at in the last movie. ”He’s not an alcoholic in the movies. Maybe one day that’s a deeper story, but we’re not going to do it unless we can make it a full-focused plot.”
Then again, that is if Tony Stark returns. Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel ends after this next installment, though after the $50 million pay he received after big box office numbers for The Avengers, some may say he’s a fool to leave now. Though the actor has been very vocal in his not wanting to leave the character to someone else, Feige repeated the same sentiments when he said “I hope we will see more of his Tony Stark in the future, but the focus right now is on Iron Man 3.”
Along with that, Feige also debunked the rumor that Bruce Banner may show up in Iron Man 3 after he rode off into the sunset with Tony at the end of The Avengers. However, he did assure that we ”will see the Ruffalo Hulk in future. I don’t know when or how, exactly, but he’s an interesting character, and so many new avenues have opened up. But now in the movies, who’s gonna pop up where? You’re never quite sure.”
And with that Hulk future quip, Feige did reveal a huge detail about that 2014 mystery movie that will be coming May 16th, 2014. Now, many rumors have surfaced regarding Marvel features possibly in the works including Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, and various stand alone projects. It turns out we already know just who the mystery film will be about. Feige’s major clue was revealed as he says “Our next step will be to introduce a character outside the Avengers’ world.”
With that, the field has been reduced significantly. Now, the choices have seemingly narrowed to either a Hawkeye stand alone feature, a Black Widow solo outing, or a S.H.I.E.L.D. centered film. So far, the one with the most weight thanks to previous interviews happens to be a possible S.H.I.E.L.D. film. Not only would in encorporate various individuals from the defense organization in a larger capacity, but it would also give both Black Widow and Hawkeye time to shine. Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan) previously had said a S.H.I.E.L.D. film would be aiming for a 2014 release, but no concrete evidence has since become available. Could he be right after all?
What do you think about all the new details? Who are you hoping for in the 2014 mystery movie?
