It’s been a bittersweet week for SNL this week, as not only did the series close out a great season with guest stars like Mick Jagger, The Foo Fighters, Jon Hamm, Arcade Fire, Steve Martin, Amy Poehler, and everyone’s favorite Weekend Update correspondent Stefon, but they also bid farewell to Kristen Wiig, and quite possibly Andy Samberg & Jason Sudeikis as well. However, today’s attention turns to the big screen as SNLwriter and Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone has revealed that a second MacGruber film may actually be in the works.
Talking with ScreenCrush, Taccone revealed that they have a story but nothing is too concrete at this point. ”It would be me, Will [Forte] and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.”
It sounds like Forte really wants to do a sequel, and the comedic actor has really only received supporting roles in various films so it’s clear that he wants to headline another feature soon. The big problem would ultimately be convincing the studio to make a second MacGruber. While it has easily become a cult hit and loved by plenty, the film completely bombed at the box office with only an $8 million opening weekend in 2010. 94% of all theaters dumped the film two weeks after it was released, and it was really a disaster for Rogue films.
Taccone wouldn’t reveal any plot details concerning a second installment, including whether or not Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, or others would return. He did reveal the sequel would take place at Christmas a la Die Hard, but he says that a sequel won’t begin work soon. Forte has signed on for Alexander Payne’s next film, while Taccone has two projects in the works including one with Adam Sandler. He did say, however, that a sequel would eventually be tackled as “It would be a shame not to do another one.”
