Marvel and DC have casted plenty of well known actors as superheroes in the past. Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Reynolds, Halle Berry, and others are all just examples of the roster that has come and gone over the years. With The Avengers now gone, not only is Marvel looking forward to an eventual sequel, while DC Comics is looking to somehow compete. And it seems that there may be something in the works with the wrestling superstar known best as The Rock.
Dwayne Johnson tweeted (via CBM) in response to an initial status that read ”I could see Rock playing in DC movies. Gravedigger or John Stewart (JL’s Green Lantern)” with the actor replying ”Funny U say that…”, indicating that something is indeed in the works. However, there’s also the likely change he could just be toying with his followers, so take it at least with a grain of salt.
But in the chance that it is true, what exactly could he be in talks for? DC Comics could in fact bring John Stewart into play and look at rebooting the Green Lantern franchise with a sequel. Then again the most likliest he could be in talks for that we know involving DC is that the studio is currently getting a Lobo film together with Journey 2 director Brad Peyton at the helm. Seeing how he’s worked with Johnson before, he could easily call upon his actor once more for the alien bounty hunter, though some fear he may not bring the fierce violence that the character is capable of.
Another DC hero that everyone seems to be fond of the actor portraying happens to be Black Adam, a villain for Captain Marvel. To see the often hero in a villain role would be a refreshing change of pace, and the character of Captain Marvel has found some great impressions upon a new generation thanks to the animated series Young Justice. While some may argue that The Flash or Wonder Woman deserve the stand alone film, it still may be interesting to see the hero with family appeak brought to the big screen.
On the Marvel side of things some suggest that Johnson could portray Luke Cage, a man with the the strength like The Hulk and a similar healing factor of Wolverine. A Luke Cage film has been in development for some time, with John Singleton attached to direct, but it’s unclear where the movie stands right now. Originally at Columbia Pictures, the rights could have easily returned to Marvel Studios thus making the hero possible for new life over at Disney. Originally, the film was set for a 2005 release, but obviously some substantial time has passed. Cage is a member of the New Avengers within the comics, which means the character could be an all-new addition to the team in The Avengers 2. Kevin Feige has said there are two Marvel films in development that have not yet been announced, and a Luke Cage film could very much be one of the mystery outings.
However, don’t expect any big development sometime soon. Johnson is currently filming the Michael Bay dark comedy Pain & Gain, and he’s set to transition to Fast & Furious 6 next month. From there, he’s signed for Brett Ratner’s Hercules, and then eventually he’s to tackle Journey 3 as he’s attached along with Josh Hutcherson to return to the adventure series. It’s only then he’ll be able to tackle this mystery superhero movie.
