With just a little while to go until production, Robert Rodriguez is ready for his first of two sequels to premiere next yearMachete Kills. With some impressive casting updates out of the gate thus far, there certainly been plenty of questions as to how exactly everyone will fit into the story. Now, it seems that one more kick-ass actress will be joining the line up thanks to an interview with the lead responsible for the titular character.
In an interview with Moviehole, lead actor Danny Trejo said “The sequel to Machete, Machete Kills is going to be a lot more over-the-top than Machete. We’ve got Sofia Vergara, who is a star in her own right, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoe Saldana – and guess what? I get to kiss all of ‘em.”
Now, this is the first ever mention of Zoe Saldana at all, and it has yet to be confirmed from any other source other than Trejo himself. But seeing how it comes from someone who’s very much involved with the project and knows very well about the development, it seems extremely likely that the actress has been cast in the upcoming film.
Saldana proved she could bring the action in last year’sColombiana, and her part in Machete Kills will be her next major role in the genre. Saldana also has two films waiting to be released with this year’s thriller The Words starring Bradley Cooper and Olivia Wilde, along with next year’s highly anticipated sci-fi sequel Star Trek 2.
If true, Saldana joins Trejo, Rodriguez, Alba, along with fellow newcomes Mel Gibson, Demian Bichir, and Amber Heard. Rodriguez revealed at Cannes that the plot description previously given is actually a fake, meaning we don’t exactly know which role Gibson will be playing, nor Demian Bichir. Previous reports say that Heard will be playing an undercover assassin, while Vergara will play the leather-clad Madame Desdemona, whose Mexican harlots have information that Machete needs.”
The film is currently on track to being production within the next month, and will begin filming in Austin, Texas. Rodriguez returns to direct before he heads off to helm his other sequelSin City 2 later this summer. Machete Kills will be released by Dimension Films at an undetermined date in 2013.
