Sony Hires ‘Star Trek’ Scribes to Rewrite ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′

Orci and Kurtzman

Though it has yet to open in theaters, The Amazing Spider-Manhas gained a decent amount of buzz, but not nearly enough as some of its other summer and superhero counterparts. Still, Sony has already given the film a major vow of confidence as a sequel is already in the work and dated. Whiel it’s unclear how the upcoming reboot will do, Sony has had a script in the works for the second film for sometime now. Today though, the studio has revealed that it has hired two other writers to tackle the upcoming second film instead.

Deadline reports that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have been handed the task of rewriting the sequel for The Amazing Spider-Man. Original scribe James Vanderbilt wrote the first draft, but for some reason Sony was thrilled to bring the duo in to work on the sequel. Orci and Kurtzman are expected to start a completely new draft, and then receive executive producer credits on the sequel to compliment their work as well.

There’s plenty of time until shooting for the sequel begins, as the film already has a 2014 release date. Filming will begin sometime next year, so that’s plenty of time for the duo’s writing process. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and more are all set to return, and it’s likely that Sally Field, Dennis Leary, Chris Zylka and others will all come back as well.

Orci and Kurtzman helped write Star Trek and it’s upcoming sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the FallenCowboys & Aliens,Mission: Impossible III, and more, with television work onFringeHawaii Five-0 and more. This will be their first time working with a superhero, and should be interesting to see just what happens.

This week, we also learned that Vanderbilt had a little help with the first film’s script as well. Paul Feig (Freaks & Geeks) helped the script by writing some of the dialogue scenes within the high school, giving it more of a teenage approach. Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped Vanderbilt out with the first script as well, gaining co-writer credits in the process.

The Amazing Spider-Man comes out on July 3rd, with the sequel set for a release on May 2nd, 2014.
