A sequel to the original Dumb and Dumber has been in the works for sometime now. While Jim Carrey has said he was in talks with The Farrelly Brothers to reprise his role, the latest update came last fall when the film’s script writers were actually hired. Lately, sequels to old movies have been large news grabbers, including Midnight Run 2 and Triplets. Now, it’s time for Dumb and Dumber 2 to grab the spotlight as one of The Farrelly Brothers has said the sequel will soon be a reality.
In a press junket for their upcoming film The Three Stooges, Peter Farrelly told ComingSoon, ”We’re getting set to shoot ‘Dumb and Dumber 2′ in September,” he says. “It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.” The script began it’s writing phase last October when Sean Anders and John Morris were hired by New Line Cinema. If the film hits next summer, it will be almost 18 years after the original bowed in theaters as well.
But, what about the horrible prequel film released back in 2003? ”We did not do ‘Dumb and Dumberer,’” Farrelly told the site.”That was a studio thing. So we’ve always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, ‘We’ve got to do this thing again.’ He had just watched ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and he said, ‘This is the perfect sequel. Let’s do it.’”
The Farrelly Brothers’ recent efforts are seen as more failures than anything. After Fever Pitch, the duo have been met with a string of films very negatively received, such as The Heartbreak Kid and Hall Pass. The atmosphere and buzz around The Three Stooges looks to repeat the same formula, but perhaps Dumb and Dumber 2 will actually be a change of pace. It’ll be interesting to see who else will join the second film, and if they can be just as successful this second time around. With Jim Carrey’s own career meeting troubles as of late (Mr. Popper’s Penguins), it sounds like he’s very much in tapping back into the role for all the right reasons, not to mention he’s only done one sequel before in his career.
We’ll keep you updated with any new information that comes forth from sequel news as the press for The Three Stoogescontinues, and that production start date begins to narrow.
