Just last week, writer Nicholas Stoller revealed that the upcoming Muppets sequel, which Disney wants out by sometime next year, would be a caper, and would have a cameo for Jason Segel. Though the actor has said he’s refusing to show up in the upcoming second film, the information given certainly gave plenty of fan’s something to look forward to. Now, as the press continues for Stoller and Segel’s The Five-Year Engagement, he’s getting more questions about the film that’s in the writing stages. And today, Stoller has revealed that the newest muppet will certainly not fade into the background.
Vulture reports at the premiere for Engagement, Stoller told them “Walter is coming back. Come on, you saw the first one, right? The arc of the story was, ‘Am I a man or a Muppet?’ Gary chose ‘I am a man.’ So if you were making something called The Mannets, Gary would be in that. Walter chose to be a Muppet. He realized he’s a Muppet. He is not making [just] a cameo. He is heavily involved in the story.
But, it won’t focus too heavily on the newest character. “It’s in the early stages, so everything could change, but right now it’s a Kermit-centric story, as a lot of the original movies were.” While Kermit was very much a big part of the last film, you couldn’t help but feel that he was pushed just a bit to the side as we focused on Walter, Gary, and Mary.
Stoller has also said that the sequel will introduce new characters as well along with the classic gang, so perhaps Walter leads the charge of new muppets. However, what I’d like to see in the second film would be a better handling of the ones we already know. It’d be great to get Rizzo back talking again, wise-cracking alongside Gonzo, while also bringing a story that doesn’t exactly sway back and forth as it did with the humans vs. muppet tale.
We’ll keep you updated as the script progresses, including whatever new details are revealed.
