Mel Gibson In Talks for ‘Machete Kills’, Robert Rodriguez May Not Direct Whole Film

Rodriguez

With the big news this month being Sin City 2‘s summer production start, and the push for Machete Kills‘ production, it seems director Robert Rodriguez is very busy. As the cast if solidfying for both films, and the script is also written for both features, it seems the sequel stove is burning for the helmer. Though he’s said there won’t be a scheduling conflict, it seems there’s the chance it could in fact arise. However, while he’s still behind the camera, he’s gained one of the actors he was seeking to include.

THR is reporting that due to his directing commitment to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Rodriguez has revealed that he may have to hand off directing for Machete Kills to someone else. ”Currently I am directing it. But we’re checking to see if there’s going to be the need for another director if I have to go off and do Sin City. I wasn’t sure what the timing on Sin Citywas or if I would have to step off to do Sin City at a certain point, depending on when Machete went. But Machete looks like it’s going to go pretty quickly so it’s possible that I will direct the whole thing.”

Rodriguez continued with words of encouragement, saying “There’s so much of it that I want to direct I’ll probably end up directing the whole thing. But if I have to step off, I’m going to try and shoot all of the actors and all of the main sequences. But it’s such a fun movie, and it just came out even more fun than I could have imagined. I feel like I really need to do it, he reiterated. “It’s so subjective I feel like I really need to get in there and do it. It’s just a lot of fun; it’s a really cool concept, and I think it takes it to another level in a way that’s compelling for me to go and do it myself.”

So, while there’s the chance that another director may have to step in, he’s still making some big moves. Rodriguez had stated earlier this month that he’d like to cast Mel Gibson or Michelle Williams in Machete Kills. Tonight, he may be getting half his wish. Deadline reports that Gibson has entered “serious talks” to join the cast, though his role remains under wraps for right now. This wouldn’t be the first fell-out-of-grace-actor to star in a Machete, as Lindsay Lohan was a major player of the first film. It’s unclear if Gibson will sign, but early reports claim the actor is in it for the long haul.

Machete Kills is coming sometime next year at a date to be determined.
