The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) was held this weekend, and Marvel came out with plenty of big comic-related announcements. With the Avengers vs. X-Men event just kicking off, of course the comics company plugged the series, that premieres its second issue this Wednesday, at the convention. Now, Marvel has announced plans for more title coming this year, including a big event for their Ultimate Comics line, and the return of two characters.
First up, Marvel announced Minimum Carnage, revealing the first cover art, and showing that the upcoming series will deal with Flash “Venom” Thompson and Scarlet Spider. The title itself is reminsecent to that of the Spider-Man crossover from the ’90s Maximum Carnage, and this series does indeed bring the supporting characters of the Spidey universe together. Other than that, no details have yet been revealed.
Next up, likely in anticipation that The Avengers will boost interest in the character, the company also announced that Hawkeye will be returning in his own series this August, written by Matt Fraction (Fear Itself, The Invincible Iron Man) and drawn by David Aja (Thor #600, Captain America #600). Fraction was quoted as saying, “HAWKEYE is more about what inspires Clint Barton,” Fraction explains, “We got Clint in AVENGERS, SECRET AVENGERS, and anywhere else at any given time—but we wanted HAWKEYE to be about what Clint does when he’s not at work, about what drives the guy. He’s got some stuff coming up in [Avengers Vs. X-Men] and afterwards he’s in a place where he’s gotta figure out what he’s doing with himself and why. What moves him, what’s meaningful for him.”
The series will also feature Kate Bishop, the other Hawkeye of the Marvel Universe, right by Barton’s side. “She’s his junior partner, his apprentice,” says Fraction. “It’s a very Avengers relationship—meaning Steed and Peel—and she’s as adrift as he is. What the hell are these two doing with their lives? Turns out, helping people is what they have to do to get through the night. In costume, in life, doesn’t matter. Good guys don’t punch a time card at 5:00.”
Finally, Marvel revealed that a big event will be coming for the Ultimate Comics universe as well. While Spider-Men seems to be a big milestone for the new webslinger Miles Morales, the wall crawler will soon be celebrating his one year anniversary. And with it, comes his involvement in the new crossover Divided We Fall. Spanning the Ultimate Comics‘ Spider-Man, Ultimates, and X-Men, details of the series are incredibly thin right now, set to be revealed as the week goes on. But, with Morales finally starting to spread outside of his own title, it seems the new hero is sure to expand his reach.
The series will be written by Brian Michael Bendis, Sam Humphries, and Brian Wood, who are all collaborating. BMB has had a busy year so far, as he’s been involved with Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, the upcoming Spider-Men mini series, and currently Avengers vs. X-Men.
