Last month, after months of “will they, won’t they”, we received another update on the development of the planned sequel Bill & Ted 3. With Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter sounding like they’re on board, it’s certainly been a project to watch. But, for whoever else will return in the second film is completely up in the air. Now, one of the actors from the series past has revealed that he’s talked with one of the main duo, and they are trying to convince him to return.
William Sadler, who played Death (also known as The Grim Reaper) in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, told MovieWeb that they are trying to write-in the character to appear in the third film. “I’m not sure if it’s a done deal yet. I know they’re trying to write The Grim Reaper in. Alex said, ‘How could we do this without the Reaper?’ I’m hopeful. I’d love to go back and play with those guys again. That was one of the most fun roles I’ve done. I’ll be there in a heartbeat, if they want to do it.”
If successful, Sadler would be the first returning star from the original series, besides Reeves and Winter, to be confirmed for the project. Bill & Ted 3 was announced last April, and since not too much has been going on in terms of development. The script was written by original scribes Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, but whether or not that’s changed hands over the last year is unclear. It was said that the duo received the script early last year, but that was all we heard last. The story had to do with the titular two writing a song to save the world, and Winter stated at Comic-Con that it may involve time travel to the prehistoric era, and the film would “likely see a cameo by Eddie Van Halen, as well as the return of popular characters Socrates and Billy the Kid from the first movie.”
The franchise is over at MGM, who’s financial stability is definitely in question after the shaky Bond issue awhile back. But it also has a history with Universal as well, so it will more than likely come down to either two of those studios. Whether or not either will try to persue the sequel, or if the project will just wind up in development hell, has yet to be determined.
We’ll keep you updated on more information regarding the project as development progresses.
