International Trailer for ‘The Dictator’

While the first trailer for The Dictator has had people chuckling a little, you can’t help but feel like the film was just a little dry. It feels very much like Borat territory while delving much more into the fictional side. Still, it looks over the top, not too redeemable, and like audiences could pass the film off as something too crude. Now, we have the international trailer for the film that actually shows what we’ve seen in the first trailer was only the beginning of a much deeper story.

Anna Faris’ role was always one of extreme importance, and really was an afterthought following the first trailer that had most people going “Ugh, again?” With the showing of this more relatable story where things can play out, while still retaining the offensive jokes, the film certainly sheds an all-new light that makes me actually interested in seeing how it will turn out. I still can’t shake the reminders of You Don’t Mess with the Zohan that a foreign accent and the New York City setting brings, but this new trailer certainly shows there’s more to the film than what Paramount has shown thus far.

That being said, how questionable does Paramount’s marketing have to be today? Earlier, there is the statement from Michael Bay that the studio’s marketing team are the ones who are shortening the TMNT reboot to just Ninja Turtles, and now we have all-new footage of The Dictator that actually makes the film look like a reasonable watch instead of the dribble we got with the first trailer. Definitely an…interesting approach indeed.

Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C. Reilly, B.J. Novak Aasif Mandvi, and much more, The Dictator will open everywhere on May 11th.
