Thundercats successfully proved last year that revivals can be damn impressive last year, when they returned for a new generation in July, with a deep story, serious characters, and great action. However, one of the most irritating aspect were the multiple hiatuses last fall that eventually ended in the season finale this past December. With another 13 episodes already commissioned, it was a question of just how long we would have to wait until the series returned. Now, Cartoon Network has revealed just when the show will be coming back, and it won’t be on its usual Friday nights.
IGN’s executive editor for TV Eric Goldman tweeted the news, saying ”ThunderCats: Season 2 premieres in new timeslot on Saturday, March 24th at 9:30am.” This makes Thundercats the second Friday night series to get the bump from the nightly primetime slot into the Saturday morning. It also will put the show with new episodes before the highly advertised DC Nation block, and creates a Saturday morning from 8AM to 11AM of all new content for the network.
The series has been critically praised, and averaged a solid number of ratings during its first season run. While the 11 subsequent episodes failed to match the series premiere ratings of 2.4 million, the viewers have never dipped below 1.4 million yet for new episodes of the series. However, with the early morning timeslot, it will be interesting to see how the viewership now varies.
Starring Will Friedle, Dee Bradley Baker, Clancy Brown, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Robin Atkin Downes, Matthew Mercer, Kevin Michael Richardson, and more, Thundercats is a reboot of the original series about a group of Thunderian Cats who venture to seek out the Book of Omens, and eventually the three stones of power, after their kingdom is attacked by a lizard army, led by Grune the Destroyer, all under the power of the evil Mumm-Ra.
