Mark Millar Says ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Is Among Projects That Will Shoot This Year; Talks ‘American Jesus’ and ‘Secret Service’

We’ll be honest: when it comes to superhero films, we’ve been dying for a sequel to Kick-Ass. The redheaded stepchild of the U.S. box office when it was released, the film has gained plenty of fame via home video by the teenagers too young to see it in theaters, along with high praise from critics and audiences alike for its realisitic take on the genre. While information has been tossed around here and there, it seems the film may have discovered some foundation, as creator Mark Millar himself has said the film isn’t too far off from rolling cameras.

In an interview with the Scottish Daily Record, Millar stated that “We shoot Kick-Ass 2 and American Jesus this summer. Then Matthew and I have Secret Service, which is a neddy James Bond.”

Now, in those two sentences, there’s definitely a lot to process.

Millar saying Kick-Ass 2 will be shooting in the summer is definitely a huge step. Late last year, Chloe Moretz had said she wanted to do the film soon due to her age increasing, but no other indication from Lionsgate or other cast members have yet indicated a production start. However, with Moretz becoming an even bigger star due to Best Picture nominee Hugo, her plate seems very full, and the true task will be reuniting everyone, including Aaron Johnson, Lyndsy Fonseca, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and more. It certainly seems like it could be done, but only time will tell.

Millar definitely goes into detail on American Jesus in the interview, saying “If you are doing a movie about the return of Jesus as the Bible prophesied in the Book of Revelation, you have got to do it straight and treat it with dignity. I’m not taking the piss. It will be treated like a proper film…A lot of people are surprised because much of my work is irreverent and expect the same with American Jesus. But I want it to be a beautiful film. A film about the returned Jesus Christ has amazing artistic potential. Jesus shows up in the middle of the financial crisis, America is in turmoil and the Eurozone is collapsing. They are quite apocalyptic times that we are living in with the gap between rich and poor. It is the reverse of The Omen, which is about a kid who finds out he is the anti-Christ. This is a kid who finds out he is Jesus Christ.”

Finally, Matthew Vaughn’s inclusion in Millar’s Secret Service is certainly another detail that we can go in-depth about. Millar spoke on this adaptation as well, saying “I am a massive Bond fan and Secret Service is like My-Fair-Lady-meets-James-Bond. I am halfway through the comic and Matthew and I are halfway through the script. There is a good role for a 50-something actor to play an older gentleman spy training this young kid. There are not a lot of tough actors in that age group but you would never believe Colin Firth or Hugh Grant in a fight scene. We are bouncing names around.”

Now, it’ll be very interesting to see where Matthew Vaughn comes into all of this. Vaughn is confirmed to return for X-Men: First Class 2, which is also in the script stage as well. Which film will come first definitely remains to be seen, but you would think that Vaughn’s commitment to the high-profile sequel may just come first. Furthermore, if Millar is constantly working with Vaughn, the director could influence Kick-Ass 2. Though with a full plate, he most likely won’t be at the helm of the sequel, he could definitely return in capacity of producer, and that could help wrangle the cast back together.
