While we have a couple of weeks until we find out just howJohn Carter will do at the box office and with critics, there has been a great amount of positive buzz surrounding the film from people who have seen it. While the series of novels the film is adapted from certainly leave the option open for the film to be expanded into series, nothing has yet surfaced from Disney about whether or not that will become reality. Today, however, it’s been revealed that director Andrew Stanton is working on a second movie, with the script being written right now.
ComingSoon reported from an exclusive John Carter press event in Arizona, saying producer Jim Morris revealed that Stanton and co-writer Michael Chabon are working on the screenplay for a sequel to the upcoming sci-fi effort, which will has a working title of John Carter: The Gods of Mars. The title derives from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ second novel in theBarsoom series of the same name.
As for the story, Amazon has the synopsis of the book, but obviously *SPOILERS* follow:
Soldier and adventurer John Carter tells the story of how he returns to the planet Mars to be reunited with his love, the Martian princess Dejah Thoris. With his great friend Tars Tarkas, mighty Jeddak of Thark, Carter sets out in search of his princess. But Dejah Thoris has vanished. And Carter becomes trapped in the legendary Eden of Mars from which none has ever escaped alive.
Now, there’s no indication if John Carter will follow the same direct path as Burroughs’ first novel A Princess of Mars, especially seeing how there’s an incredibly significant time jump between the first and second books. But, it at least gives us a brief glimpse as to where the series could be headed.
It’s important to note that Disney has not yet greenlit a second John Carter film just yet, as the company wants to see how the first movie does at both the box office domestically and internationally. Disney’s last few sci-fi adventures, such as the gigantic bomb Mars Needs Moms and Tron: Legacy (which has a greenlit sequel that will be coming sometime in the future), haven’t fared too well with either critics or audiences, but John Carter could very much be the end in the cold streak.
The film opens everywhere on March 9th.
