‘Insidious’ Sequel Will Be Coming Next Year, Original Duo Signed On

One of the solid successes of 2011 that seemed to come out of nowhere, Insidious received a solid number of reviews and almost took on $100 million worldwide at the box office. Made for little money, and with a notable cast, it joins the number of small budget-big box office horror films that have been hitting since Paranormal Activity. Now, FilmDistrict has announced that you haven’t seen the last of Insidious just yet, and that a second film is one the way with some familiar faces.

THR reports that a sequel is on the way, with original director James Wan and original writer Leigh Whannell returning to their respective duties on the second film.

No word yet on when the movie will film, but it’s expected to possibly get production started this fall for a release sometime next year. Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson’s involvement in the sequel is to be determined, as the duo played a husband/wife couple in the first film, which ended in a cliffhanger involving both characters. However, Wan’s next project is directing Wilson in a new film called The Conjuring, so perhaps during production, the director can persuade the actor to return to the sequel.

Whannell also stated that the duo will be trying to retain as much of the original team from the first film as possible, saying “It is with great excitement that we announce our commitment to a second installment of this story. Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film.”

The first film surrounded a family who shortly after moving discover that dark spirits have possessed their home and that their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma. Trying to escape the haunting and save their son, they move again only to discover that it was not their house that was haunted. Plot details, understandably, are under lock and key right now.
