Though Shailene Woodley is getting big praises for her performance in The Descendants, she’s long been on the small screen as the main character of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager. As the seasons go on, people were wondering if the show would ever be cancelled. But, with Woodley’s name sure to bring more fans to the mid-season premiere next month, ABC Family has renewed one of their big hits for a new season, while also greenlighting a reality series, as well as a new comedy starring Chelsea Kane and Tahj Mowry.
TV Line reports that Secret Life has been picked up for a fifth season, making it the longest series in the channel’s original programming history by surpassing Wildfire and Greek, which both received only four seasons.
Meanwhile the network also picked up a reality series (their first in quite some time) called Beverly Hills Nannies, which you can somewhat guess the premise of based on the title alone. Keeping with the baby theme, Family also picked up a new comedy called Baby Daddy, “about a guy who must raise a baby girl with the help of his brother (90210‘s Derek Theler) and friends (JONAS‘ Chelsea Kane and The Game’s Tahj Mowry) after his ex leaves the child on his doorstep”. No word on just when both those series will premiere, but it’s likely they’ll get a summer start.
Mowry’s sister Tia, along with Tori Spelling, was cast in the ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas film Mistle-Tones, which is essentially a Glee version of a Christmas film that involves two battling teams of Christmas carolers. No word if Mowry and Spelling will be on the same team, or if they’ll be the directors posed against each other.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns on March 26th along with the season premiere of ABC Family’s gymnastic hitMake It or Break It.
