‘Face Off’ Review: “Water World” (2.02)

Season 2: Episode  2; “Water World”

The backdrop for the sea creature challenge, and latest episode of Face Off was the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. It’s quickly explained that the new 3 day challenge will be influenced by ocean dwellers. Not only do they have to find their motivation under the sea, the looks have to withstand water. (Namely in front of the judges via a water tank!)

Placed in teams of two contestant the bickering begins. Beki is totally PO’ed that she’s been  paired with “the greenest artist here”,  also known as 21-year-old Miranda.

Jerry would clearly rather work alone than with anyone else. He definately didn’t want to have to work with Nix. But then again who would the prideful because -I-have-soooo-much-more-experience-than-everyone-else-and-I’ll-never-let-you-forget-it, ever be at ever be excited to work with? No one…

Just curious, is any one else intrigued by the concept of waterproof make up in general?? I’m totally leery of just waterproof mascara because when I have something I want off of me, I use water. So my first thought is how do I get it off then…? I feel like no matter what water should be involved.

Now back to Beki and Miranda. I don’t know if Beki was trying to push Miranda’s buttons (and when I say I don’t know, I mean she completely appeared to be intentional in doing exactly that!) with all of her questions digging into Miranda’s background and whatnot. Considering that they were partners this week you’d think she’d want to play nice.  (If she ends up doing poorly because she’s angry with Beki, what’s the game plan in that?!–they’re on the same team!!!)

In addition to being annoyingly inquisitive into Miranda’s  history, they also butt heads on the facial sculpting–  is it a duck or is it a chicken nose? —both problematic since they chose a sea dragon as their inspiration. What I will say is that after they’ve been yelling at each other its pretty hilarious when Miranda out of nowhere tells the judges (when they’re making their progress rounds) that everything is going great and her and Beki are working well with each other!  During her bold face lie, Beki’s jaw hits the floor.

For their bickering nonsense those ladies still turned it out. Check it out…

Meanwhile in the other corner you have Jerry passive aggressively making comments that Nix is pretty much not up to par. Which  proves ironic because it’s Jerry’s sculptured head that looks straight up like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Nix’s paint job  didn’t help it  though…

Now I honestly dug RJ and Ian’s lawyer shark concept, but I wondered just like the judges why they put the shark fin right off the neck. That was clearly not right….Where they also went wrong was putting their model actually in a full on suit. All that fabric went all over the place as soon as it hit the water.

At first I was pretty skeptical about Tara and Matt. They went with the fairy basslet and I felt bad for their model that had to get completely naked and have her butt blurred out (even after the body paint was applied). But also because they had so much trouble getting their add-on pieces to actually stick!

Later  (to the judges no less) they admit they hadn’t taken any time to see if their makeup was waterproof at all (why?! why would they not do this? and then tell people they didn’t do this?!) While they’re talking just  I’m completely confused by all these plastic things that have been strategically placed to draw attention away from the non meshing edges. I felt like they were as surprised as I was at home watching to see how amazing those iridescent films looked in the water!! And everything stayed on! Well done, well done. (lucky much??!) Still an overall win I could support.

Honorable mention shout out to the zebra fish team. For 75% body paint and 25% face sculpture, that was a creation home run.

Best quote of the show was by far from Beki (unfortunately when she was being RUDE) when she said, “Prove yourself to the Nation because you’re on Face Off!”

Work it out folks. Can’t wait for next week.
